Let's go back to the end of the Silver Age of Comics (1956-1970) to the time when Supergirl had displaced the Legion of Super-Heroes from DC's longest-running book at that time, Adventure Comics, and issue #394 in particular. The cover was drawn by the unforgettable team of Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson, in our opinion the greatest Superman ever had, although they were never the regular artists on Supergirl and did not, in fact, do the interior art for the story "Heartbreak Prison" that is featured on the cover and was the inspiration for what we're about to see.
Our longtime friend and contributor D. M. Sherwood was so captivated by the implications of that cover - "You started this riot, Supergirl! Well, we can punish even you!" - that he decided to commission Miracle Spoonhunter to draw the scene of what that punishment should have been, namely a good paddling!
Mr. Sherwood's conception places Supergirl over a barrel - literally (this is where the phrase comes from) - to receive chastisement on her bare bottom with a kryptonite paddle. The prison guard seems to be laying it on with gusto, and although we don't care for institutional punishment scenes generally this one takes clever advantage of a missed opportunity for the Silver Age Supergirl to get the spanking we always wanted to see but that never happened. Our artist, Miracle Spoonhunter, has been seen in these pages before (see Mr. Lodge Spanks Veronica #4), and we'll be seeing him again before too long.
