Mister Miracle Spanks Big Barda

For the conclusion of our current Big Barda mini-series, we need introduce only one new character, but first let's see her in what we presume is her fan-favorite costume, a crazy-looking modified bikini. Now, Jack Kirby excelled at all phases of comics art, including costume and set design, but it's often hard to understand the functionality of some of his accoutrements. What do those mini-shields at Barda's hips do? Help keep her bikini up? It seems more likely their weight would tend to pull it down. They certainly don't protect her fanny from a surprise swat attack !

We mentioned that those hip-shields on Barda's bikini seemed likely to pull it down, and we'd bet that they're what her husband Mister Miracle used to do just that when it came time to bare her bottom. Not that she's protesting: she's willingly bending over and has a funny put-down directed at him: "Come on, Scott - put down your purse and smack my ass!" He should have used a big paddle .

It's a funny and sexy scene by artist Tim Phillips, whom we have just seen in Lashina Lashes Big Barda. Phillips is obviously quite capable technically: notice that not only can he draw in genuine "comic book style," he has complete control of posture and body language (Scott's rather limp-wristed spanking attempt, for instance). No OTK position, but Phillips does the bending-over position quite well, with Barda's knees perfectly straight. Scott should have brought along a big paddle.

In this day of ubiquitous internet pornography, with super-heroines being drawn performing every conceivable sexual act (not to mention spanking, our real interest), it's probably hard for young guys today to imagine the stir caused by this Dave Cockrum drawing of Big Barda back in the 1970's. Cockrum drew it in 1972, but it wasn't widely seen until four years later when it made the cover of The Nostalgia Journal #31 (later The Comics Journal). We're pretty sure we still have that issue in our basement, but fortunately we were able to obtain a scan and didn't have to go hunting for it.

Cockrum somehow never reached the height of comics stardom even though he was well-known and drew the new X-Men in their first appearance (Giant-Size X-Men #1) after the team was re-engineered as a multi-national group by Len Wein and Roy Thomas. It went on to be far more popular than the original X-Men had ever been, to the point that you couldn't keep track of all the X-Crap books Marvel was publishing. He left the title with issue #107 (we can't remember why, but he was still on staff at Marvel for another two years). Cockrum was in our view always underrated as a costume designer for he excelled in that phase of comic art, although he did rather well here with no costume at all . And so now CSR readers know why she's called Big Barda.
